Alibates Flint Quarries was made a U.S. national monument in 1965. The prevalence of flint in the area is the reason for the name. Native Americans used the rainbow-colored flint for tools and weapons. Visitors can experience the beauty of the mesa and learn about the region’s past.
The Alibates Visitor Center has exhibits about Alibates flint and the monument’s history. There are ranger-led tours and self-guided tours of the area. Built in 2000, the Amarillo National Center is an arena for concerts and sports. It holds everything from monster trucks, roping competitions, and circuses. The event center can hold 10,000 people.
